Dreadlocks and Perms, what’s a t-shirt to do?

There are many ways to support your favourite sports team, whether it is getting that season ticket, putting that favourite poster up or even getting a tattoo with the team crest (and explaining to your missus that it will wash off in the morning). However perhaps what remains the most popular way of displaying one’s sports team allegiances is through wearable merchandise. One approach to that is the classic team kit, tried and tested, it is likely to be worn to every match after THAT goal or THAT try. However the alternative has increasingly been various more creative interpretations of team insignia or icons, and this is something Nike has done to perfection.

Imaginary Reading Ghost Stories in the Library

Are you a ghost story fan? Do you like to be scared half to death by Gothic plots, white shadows and uncanny mists? I do not like ghost stories at all, I scare far too easily, and in fact the other night I was convinced that there was a ghost knocking on the my third … Read more

A Tee Tie For the People?

If you think about it the tie is an odd piece of garment. As far as clothes go it is both physically functionless and a hassle to eat soup with. Not to mention a source of many an embarrassing memories for an inept 16 year old Faisal for whom the intricacies of a ‘Double Windsor’ knot remained elusive for years. Now, I’ll readily admit that this is a straw man argument and that we don’t wear it because of its physical function but rather as an indicator of formal wear, occasion or ‘professionalism’. It has become so accepted in the Western world (and increasingly globally) that the tie is a symbol unto itself.

Imaginary French Intellectual

Can you believe that it’s approaching mid-year already? Maybe ‘mid-year’ is taking it a bit too far, but still, it’s almost March – and I’m still using each Monday morning to re-start my New Year resolutions. Back in December I promised to come to you with some exciting news in 2011, and here I am with it, and more importantly, an imaginary outfit that fits perfectly. I passed a big exam just before Christmas which means that I will (fingers, legs, eyes, ears crossed) be Dr. Kate of literature in the not too distant future. The exam went very well thanks, it was an oral one, but I’m sure I would have made an altogether more intimidating impression if I had worn the above outfit instead of the ‘plain as those little fairy cakes that have no icing on top’ black top, black trousers, black boots, and facial expression of fear outfit I opted for.

Vivienne Turns to T-shirt Printing: Comic Relief 2011

Dame Vivienne Westwood. Most definitely the woman of the moment. Whether it is having her Brit Award statuette ushering in a new ‘edgier’ show or not having the foggiest who ‘Style Icon 2011’ Emma Watson is, she’s definitely ‘smashing it’, as Richard Keys would put it. She’s definitely not averse to a bit of attention, … Read more

“i’m leakin’ it”: Wikileaks t-shirt printing and the slogan fallout

This week marks the week that Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, gets the one seal of recognition that any mass marketed self respecting revolutionary leader must gain: the ‘Che’ style t-shirt. Hopefully screen printed and sold in every flea market from Brisbane to Bangalore. From a Wikileaks perspective hopefully not, as they venture into this online merchandise in a bid to find a sustainable source of funding for embarrassing politicians and making sure we know just how much our governments resemble school gossip.

Why Juggling With a Chainsaw is Safer Than Ordering Team Kit

You know those situations where one of your friends is incredibly frustrated over what seems like the most trivial thing? And the fact that all you can do is laugh at the situation (behind their back of course and after they’ve had a chance to vent all their woes to their apparently ever understanding friend). Well I used to be that kind of person. Then the university Juggling Club 2nd team kit saga happened. And it all changed in a heartbeat. I laughed no more.
