We normally advise clients against embroidering onto t-shirts. The stitches pull the thin cotton inward where the needle enters and as a result it can often pucker or distort the logo or crest.
However, it is not an impossible task and this month Wilcom, an embroidery digitising software manufacturer, have a good article for embroiderers explaining how it can be achieved if the following factors are just right:

Today we have made our screen printing prices cheaper, the biggest change being the 50+ quantity break which has been slashed by £0.55 per item! The table below shows our new lower screen print prices with the old prices prior to 10th Sept 2012 struck out and the updated prices in red.

Screen printing is an extremely efficient technique for bulk printing and is hard wearing so we will often recommend it for workwear and promotional giveaway t-shirts.
It is always wise to double check your design before committing to print as US brand Old Navy found out this week.
